Gael Monfils is back on track
On the ATP Tour there are two groups of players that are mainly talked about. The Big Four and the Next Generation. Fortunately Gael Monfils was able to remind the world about the other players on the tour with his run to the Doha title. The Frenchman, who was playing in his first tournament since September, dropped just five games against Rublev in the final.
Despite the success, Monfils is on course to unseeded at the upcoming Australian Open for the first time since 2013.
“Australia is definitely something else,” the 31-year-old said during his press conference in Doha.
“It’s a Slam. I know it’s going to be tough because I won’t be seeded.”
“It’s been a while since I played without being seeded. It’s always an advantage in a Slam.”
“It’s going to be interesting to see the draw, where I will be. I know I can have a very tough first round.”
Last year, Monfils was ranked as high as sixth in the world.
