Lleyton Hewitt has refused to rule out a return to the doubles court at the 2019 Australian Open after his recent success at this year’s edition.
Hewitt teamed up with Sam Groth in doubles this year as it was Groth’s final tournament of his career. The Australian duo reached the Quarter-Finals beating some high quality opposition including third seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau, before being beaten by 11th seeds Cabal and Farah.
However the 36 year old has said that it may not be the last you see of him on the doubles court as in a recent interview, he refused to rule out a return in 2019. Here is what he had to say on the matter on Friday, “Not Sure – it was fun. I guess I retired from Singles. I’ve never said doubles.”
The former world number one is the only player in history to have participated in 20 consecutive Australian Open campaigns. The passionate Aussie will now captain Australia when they face Germany in next weekend’s first round Davis Cup tie.
