Kyle Edmund is hopeful that he will be fit in time to play in Great Britain’s Davis Cup tie against Spain as he recovers from a hip problem.

The 23-year-old recently broke new territory on the tour by reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open. Becoming only the sixth British man to reach the last four of a grand slam in the Open Era. His run was ended by Marin Cilic, who prevailed in straight sets. It was during the tournament where Edmund first picked up a minor hip injury. Although he refuses to blame the issue on his semifinal loss.

“There’s something, but whatever. It’s unfortunate it happens.” He told reporters last week about the issue.

Edmund, who is currently at a ranking best of 26th in the world, is set to lead the British Davis cup team in the absence of Andy Murray. Who continues to deal with his own hip problems. He will be the only British singles player ranked in the top 100 participating in the tie, which will be played on the clay. A stark contrast to the five representing Spain.

Providing an update on his fitness, Edmund told reporters on Wednesday that he continues to experience ‘niggles‘ in his body.

“Since arriving in Marbella on Monday I have been doing my best to get match-ready for the tie.” He said in a statement.
“My intention is to play as I love Davis Cup and representing my country.
“My body has a few niggles and the transition from any surface to clay is not an easy one.
“Things are improving and I’m taking a day at a time at the moment. I wanted to keep you informed of the latest news and thanks to everyone for all the support.”

Despite the upbeat comments, team captain Leon Smith is remaining grounded on Edmund’s chances of playing. If he misses the tie, it would open the door for Cameron Norrie and Liam Broady to take part. Both of whom have previously won titles on the clay, but at Futures level.

“Hopefully he can play but if he doesn’t it gives younger players an opportunity to go and get a great experience.” Smith told BBC Sport.
“We’re just going to wait and see how he wakes up tomorrow (Thursday) morning.
“If he feels good we’ll discuss it, if not others will get an opportunity.”

The upcoming Davis Cup tie will take part at the The Club de Tenis Puente Romano in Marbella. It will be the first meeting between the two countries since 1986.
