ATP Sydney: Defending Champion Gilles Muller Edges John Millman
Second seed and defending champion Gilles Muller edged out John Millman 7-6(5) 6-4 to advance to the Quarter-Finals in Sydney.
The world number 25 came back from a break down and saved two set points in the first set to overcome the Australian in 1 hour and 35 minutes. Muller served 14 aces as he gained an important victory in his bid to gain some much needed form ahead of the Australian Open. Muller will now play Benoit Paire in the Quarter-Finals on Thursday.
The other Quarter-Final in the bottom half of the draw will be Alex De Minaur taking on Feliciano Lopez. The Australian sensation lead Bosnian, Damir Dzumhur 6-2 3-0 before the 7th seed retired. The win means that De Minaur has reached back to back ATP Quarter-Finals.
He will play Lopez tomorrow after the Spaniard gained a 6-3 7-6(1) victory over third seed Diego Schwartzman. Lopez, who was ranked ten places below his opponent, thumped down 15 aces en route to victory and a place in the last eight. It is now back to back defeats for Schwartzman, who had such a good 2017 season.
Daniil Medvedev will be Paolo Lorenzi’s Quarter-Final opponent in Sydney after the Russian edged past Jared Donaldson 6-3 4-6 7-5 in just over two hours. Medvedev broke the American three times as he edged into the next round.
The final result saw fourth seed Fabio Fognini defeat Alexandr Dolgopolov 3-6 6-3 6-4 to make it two Italians into the Quarter-Finals. The Italian will now play fifth seed Adrian Mannarino in the last eight.
