Former World No. 1 Roger Federer may participate in an exhibition tour in Mexico in 2018, sources close to the event’s organizers have disclosed.
19-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, who is currently giving his preparations for next month’s Australian Open final touches in consultation with his coaches, Severin Luthi and Ivan Ljubicic could be heading to Mexico during the next season to feature in an exhibition, if the tournament’s organizers are to be believed.
There is speculation that Federer and 12-time Major winner Novak Djokovic were wooed by the organizers of the Acapulco Open, an ATP 500 event, but turned down their request as Roger has an agreement with the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and hence can’t be in Mexico during February. However, he could still visit the nation for an exhibition in December.
Federer had participated in exhibition events in the past, but has decided against them in recent times, considering the effects of a lengthy season on his aging body.
However, during the summer, the Swiss icon did speak about the possibility of appearing at an event in Mexico.
Federer said: “Probably with Acapulco is it difficult as it clashes with Dubai, where I have been playing for many, many years and I like to go there.
“So I don’t know at this point, but never say never. I love Dubai.
“Of course I would love to go visit Mexico again after all these years.”
