The Miami Open is set to get a new home in 2019, the Hard Rock stadium in 2019, after the organizers secured permission to host the event at the new site from the Miami-Dade County Commission.

Hosted at the Crandon Park Tennis Center in Key Biscayne, Miami Open is one of the most popular tournaments in the ATP’s annual calendar. A prestigious Masters 1000 event, it is only among the two tournaments besides Indian Wells having a field of 128 players that is generally seen at the Grand Slams.

According to reports, Miami-Dade County commissioners voted unanimously on Tuesday, after the deal was finalized to shift the tournament from its current home in Key Biscayne where it has taken place since 1987. Crandon Park will host the competition for the last time in 2018.

A disagreement over previous tournament operating expenses had delayed the deal earlier, but IMG, the sports management firm which owns the tournament and the county agreed on the new terms of the agreement this week.

Stephen Ross, the current owner of the Hard Rock Stadium, the home of the Miami Dolphins is planning to construct a new tennis complex at the site to make the tournament a huge success at its new home. However, initially the matches will take place on temporary courts erected inside the football stadium.

Roger Federer and Johanna Konta were the men’s and women’s singles champions in 2017 respectively.
