Garbine Muguruza’s preparations for the 2018 season have been delayed after a plane that she was on, diverted back to LA.

The plane which was supposed to travel from Los Angeles to Brisbane diverted back to LA three hours into the flight after there was a fuel shortage in the plane.

The Spaniard confirmed on Twitter that she was on the flight and is now fine:

After arriving back to the US, Muguruza and her fellow passengers had to wait six hours for their Quantas Airways plane to re-fuel and re-start.

Luckily for the Spaniard, the plane re-charged and they are now on their way to Brisbane and they are expected to arrive in Australia at 7:15 local time on Friday morning.

Muguruza will hope that this delay in arriving to Australia, doesn’t delay the amount of practice she does before her first match in Brisbane, which is expected to be on Tuesday.

Is Muguruza The Favourite In Melbourne?

Garbine Muguruza will head into Melbourne as one of the favourites having had one of the best seasons of her career in 2017. The Spaniard won two titles including winning Wimbledon for the first time in her career. She also became the World number one and held the ranking for eight weeks before Simona Halep took the ranking in Beijing.

Other contenders such as Karolina Pliskova, Venus Williams, Elina Svitolina and the returning Serena Williams will have a say in how far the Spaniard can go in Melbourne. However the Spaniard has proven that she can beat the very best and is the only person to beat both Williams sisters in grand slam finals.

If Muguruza can negotiate the first week, then nobody will want to face the Spaniard when it comes to the closing stages of the Australian Open.

Can Muguruza win her third grand slam? You can find as the Spaniard’s preparations start at the Brisbane International which starts on the 31st of December.
