Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza has set her eyes on returning to No. 1 in the WTA rankings in 2018.
Muguruza, who became World No. 1 for the first time in her career after reaching the fourth round of the US Open is probably the hardest hitter of the tennis ball on the women’s circuit after Serena Williams and Petra Kvitova.
The Spaniard realizes what she could achieve with the amount of talent she possesses and that is the precise reason why she has set her sights on reclaiming the top rank from the Romanian Simona Halep.
Muguruza, who was named ITF world champion by the sport’s governing body, the International Tennis Federation was speaking to Fox Sports about her goals for the 2018 season and the challenges she might face in her quest to achieve them. The stylish right-hander also admitted that she lacks consistency and can lose matches because of the same problem.
“I don’t think there has been a year when there have been so many different No. 1s. It was a very interesting year. It feels like every player has a chance.
“Players can have incredible weeks and almost every big tournament there was a different winner. A lot of players can win the big tournaments next year and be a top-five player if they are talented and hungry.
“Sloane Stephens has been very talented and always had great potential but put it all together to win the US Open (when ranked No. 83).’’
“It is important (to become No. 1 again), of course,’’ Muguruza said.
“Once you do it or win a Grand Slam title, and I’ve won two now, you want to experience again that incredible moment. I’m lucky I’ve been there and I want to work for it and be hungry.
“Consistency is the main thing. I sometimes miss a lot and can lose matches.’’
