Ajla Tomljanovic has defended her boyfriend, Nick Krygios, declaring that her beau is poles apart from how he is made out on Television channels and in the newspapers.
Tomljanovic was a Croatian national until 2014, but recently passed her test for Australian citizenship with flying colors. She has been in an on-off relationship with Kyrgios for the past couple of years. In fact, there was reports mid-year that their relationship has hit a rough patch, but the couple quickly resolved their differences and are back together.
They seem to be so much in love at the moment that recently the pair was seen kissing in public. And Tomljanovic has now lashed out at Kyrgios’s critics for making fun of the two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist’s battles with a string of injuries and his alleged laid back approach towards the game.
“What is perceived on TV and in the papers is what comes out on court. We all have that negative part of ourselves when things aren’t going well,’’ she said.
“They don’t see the genuine part when he’s with his friends and family. A lot of things aren’t fair in life. You can’t help it.
“Just hitting with him helps (my tennis). We never play flat out obviously because I wouldn’t win a point. Sometimes the spin and everything else is too much.’’
Tomljanovic hasn’t received her Australian passport and do not know when she would be eligible for selection in the country’s Fed Cup squad.
“This one (tournament) is always special. I’ve done a couple of pre-seasons here,’’ she said.
Tomljanovic has made a remarkable recovery from a career threatening shoulder injury after she underwent an operation to get it fixed. Since her comeback in February, she has moved up from No. 664 to No. 118 in the WTA rankings.
She will be kick-starting her 2018 campaign at the Brisbane International on New Year’s Day where she will be a wildcard entrant.
