Five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova received a marriage proposal from a fan in Istanbul where she is currently on an exhibition tour.
Russian diva Sharapova, a former World No.1, was in for a huge surprise on Sunday when a Turkish fan proposed her for marriage during her match with Cagla Buyukakcay at the Sinan Erdem Dome. Sharapova was preparing to serve when the fan, surprisingly shouted “Maria, will you marry me?” resulting in loud cheers from the crowd.
Sharapova’s response, though was all the more unexpected as she replied to her admirer by saying “maybe.”

Sharapova, a winner of all four Majors made her much publicized return to competitive tennis in April 2017 after serving a 15-month doping ban. Her comeback received a lot of media attention, especially for the negative remarks made by several WTA stars, including Eugenie Bouchard and Caroline Wozniacki. Bouchard, a former Wimbledon runner-up, even called Sharapova a ‘cheat.’
However, Maria gave all of them the perfect response by advancing through to the fourth round of the US Open before losing to Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in three tight sets. She didn’t take too much time to recover from that loss though, as she won the Tianjin Open in China, her first WTA title since making her return after the doping ban.
Sharapova is currently on a promotional tour of Turkey as part of her preparations for the 2018 season.
The world’s most marketable athlete was recently in the news for the wrong reasons. Indian police launched a probe after a high profile housing project collapsed in Gurugram, a suburb of the national capital, Delhi. Sharapova was the project’s brand ambassador.
