LONDON: Rafael Nadal’s wait to win the ATP Finals has been extended after he withdrew from the competition moments after his opening match due to injury.

The world No.1 embarked upon the final tournament of the season with an injury cloud looming over his head. Leading up to London, he withdrew from events in Basel and Paris due to a knee injury. Playing David Goffin on Monday night at The O2, the Spaniard appeared to be struggling with his movement during parts of the match.

“I am off. My season is finished.” Declared Nadal. “I had the commitment to the event, with the city, with myself. I tried hard.
“I did the thing that I had to do to try to be ready to play. But I am really not ready to play. I really fought a lot during the match, but knowing that there was probably a big chance that this would be the last match of the season.”

Nadal’s withdrawl continues a trend of misfortunes he has experience at the event. Over the past 13 years he has qualified for the ATP Finals every season, but has been forced to miss five of them due to injury. Making the competition the only big tournament missing from his trophy collection. Which currently stands at 75 ATP titles.

“It is not a decision at all. Is about the pain. I cannot hold with enough power to keep playing.” He said about his decision.

The only comfort in an otherwise heartbreaking situation was Nadal’s familiarity with the situation. In April he told reporters that he was ‘more concerned’ about his knee than wrist. Last year he closed the season early due to a wrist problem.

“I know what I have to do. I know all the things that happened in the past when I had these things, and I know the treatment that I had to do.” He explained about the recovery.
“I know the periods of time that I need to work. Then, if the treatment works or not, we will see.”

Despite ending 2017 on a low, the 10-time grand slam champion seeks solace in the achievements he has made. This season, Nadal has won six titles, including two at grand slam tournaments. His best performance since 2013. Overall, he has managed to win 67 out of 78 matches played.

“I am, of course, disappointed. But I am not going to cry. I had a great season. I really appreciate all the things that happened to me during the whole season. I thank life for this unforgettable one.”

Nadal will be replaced in the London draw by fellow country countryman Pablo Carreno Busta.

“I going to work hard to try to give me more chances the next season to keep being at the top and fighting for the most important things.” He concluded.
