In the battle of former champions, Henri Kontinen and John Peers needed 12 match points to overcome US Open champions, Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau 7-6(3) 7-6(6) to keep their London hopes alive.

Despite facing break points it was the second seeds who broke in the fifth game as they grabbed an early 3-2 lead in the first set.

Both teams were serving well although John Peers’ returning was especially good in the first set as the defending champions looked to grab the first set.

However the Australian’s serve was broken down in the tenth game as the Dutch-Romanian partnership broke back to level the first set at 5-5.

The first set went to a tiebreak which saw Henri Kontinen create moments of magic as they won the tiebreak 7-3 in 50 minutes.

Like the first set, Kontinen and Peers struck again with some clever returning as they broke in the fourth game as they took a 3-1 lead. After that game both teams didn’t face a break point as the Australian Open champions lead 5-4.

In the tenth game saw a stunning turn of events as from 40-0 up, John Peers was once again broken with some stunning returning from Jean-Julien Rojer saw them save four match points for 5-5 in the second set.

By the time the second set tiebreak came along Rojer and Tecau had saved a mammoth eight match points as the second seeds couldn’t close out the match.

Match points continued to be wasted from Kontinen and Peers as their opponents saved a further four match points as they were starting to feel the pressure.

However on their 12th match point the defending champions defeated the 2015 champions to seal a much needed victory.

The loss for Rojer and Tecau means they will need a win from French duo Pierre-Hughes Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, if they want to stay in the tournament going into Thursday’s play.

The Dutch-Romanian pair will wonder how this has happened as they have won more points than their opponents in both of their Round Robin matches.

However for Kontinen and Peers they win their first match with the tour finals and will hope to do the same on Thursday if they want to qualify for the Semi-Finals.
