Rafael Nadal has reflected on the crisis in Catalonia as Rafael Nadal looks to end the season world number one in Paris.

The Spaniard was speaking about the current Catalonian independence crisis and how sad he feels about the situation back home in Spain.

Catalonia has already tried to declare independence twice from Spain, which has been denied by the Spanish government as Spain faces a constitutional crisis.

I was born in a democratic country so I believe in my country and I believe in my people,” said the world number one, who only needs to beat Hyeon Chung on Wednesday to end the year world number one.

“Anything that I can say will not go the right way because some people are always going against that. The only thing I want is things to get better. I don’t want the fracture between Catalonia. I feel close to Catalonia. I love the people in Catalonia, and most of the people feel the same.” Nadal added as he looks to win the Paris masters for the first time in his career.

Despite the ‘sad situation’ he is fully focused on the task at hand of claiming the year end world number one, “I need to win a match. I’m here ton try my best, as in every tournament, Hopefully if this happens [number one], it will be something important for me.”

He conclude by saying, “But the season is not over and it’s not the moment to think about that. I’ll try to have the right preparation for the tournament and be ready for the first match.”

After Paris, Nadal will end his season at the season ending finale in London.
