Nick Kyrgios will aim to win his first title of the season in the Beijing final tomorrow as he downed Alexander Zverev 6-3 7-5 in a very relaxed performance.
The erratic Australian produced a cool, calm and collected performance today as he reached just his second final of the season in Beijing. Despite early pressure from Zverev it was the eighth seed who grabbed the first break as a punishing backhand sealed the deal in the eighth game for a 5-3 lead. As per usual it was the serve that was the most impressive part of Nick’s game as he served 17 winners today as he took the first set with relative ease.
The second saw a tighter affair with both men playing their part in some stunning rallies and shot making, which the local Chinese crowd appreciated. However it was Kyrgios who was surprisingly being the more patient and biding his time with the German as he moved him around the court in an attempt to frustrate the German. Although 16 unforced errors came on the forehand side, it was the forehand which was doing all the damage as he pummelled the balls past a helpless Alexander Zverev.
The frustration eventually got to the world number four as he broke his racket several times after getting broken in the eleventh game of the second set. The Australian was simply too good as he wrapped up the win in 1 hour and 17 minutes to seal his place in Sunday’s final.
Not the typical Nick Kyrgios show that we are used to but it was just as effective as he looked at his very best and if he continues to show the patience that he showed today, then he looks unstoppable. Nick Kyrgios will play Rafael Nadal in tomorrow’s final, with the Australian heading into the match with a psychological advantage as he won their last meeting in Cincinnati.
