
Saturday at the US Open saw both top seeds overcome adversity to reach the second week of the tournament.
Karolina Pliskova fended off a match point to prevail over Zhang Shuai 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. It is the second consecutive match where the Czech player had to come back from a set down. In the men’s draw, Rafael Nadal got off to a slow start against Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer, who at times played tennis at a higher level than his current ranking of 59th. It wasn’t until the 116th minute of the match where Nadal converted his first break point. Eventually winning 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-1, 6-4.
