Former top 10 player Timea Bacsinszky will not play another competitive match this year after failing to recover from a right hand injury.

The Swiss player has been away from the tour since her third round loss at Wimbledon. At the grand slam she struggled with a left thigh injury before encountering problems with her hand. Shortly before the start of the US Open, Bacsinszky explained that she has been troubled by the issue since 2016. Writing on Instagram that it has ‘made her suffer since the end of last year.’

After failing to naturally recover, the 28-year-old will shortly undergo ‘minor’ surgery to correct the problem. Meaning that her 2017 season has come to an end with immediate effect.

“The treatment I have been undertaking for the last months hasn’t been enough to cure the pain in my right hand.” Bacsinszky wrote in a statement. “After discussing it with my whole team and taking several specialists’ opinions about my situation, I have decided to put to an end my 2017 season. So, I will go through a small surgical procedure these next few days.”

Bacsinszky ends her year with a win-loss record of 18-10 on the tour. At the French Open she defeated Venus Williams and Kristina Mladenovic to reach the semifinals of the event for the second time in her career. Roland Garros was the only tournament where Bacsinszky reached the semi-final stage at in singles this year.

“If everything happens according to the plan, I will be back on tour at the beginning of next year.” She said.
“I will take this period of time as an opportunity to start an early physical preparation in order to be back even stronger.”

As a result of her withdrawal, the Swiss player will end the season ranked outside the top 20 for the first time since 2014. Bacsinszky is currently ranked 34th in the world and is the highest ranking Swiss player on the WTA Tour.
