23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams and her partner Alexis Ohanian has welcomed the arrival of their first child.
The former world No.1 gave birth to a baby girl at the St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, on Friday afternoon. According to media reports in America, the baby girl weighed in at six pounds and 13 ounces. CBS 12 has reported that Williams was induced on Thursday night.
Williams announced her pregnancy in April after accidentally posting a Snapchat photo with the caption ‘20 weeks.’ Less than 24 hours after she confirmed the news. The 36-year-old found out she was pregnant shortly before the start of the Australian Open, where she won her 23rd major title by defeating sister Venus in the final.
“I found out two days before the Australian Open. I was nervous, I wasn’t sure what quite to think, but I knew at that moment it was important for me to focus at the Australian Open.” Williams said during an interview with TED.com.
“I was definitely not sure what to do. Could I play, I know it is dangerous, sometimes during the first 12 weeks. I had a lot of questions.”
Throughout her absence from the WTA Tour, Williams has stated her desire to return to action. The first grand slam of the new year is just over three months away, but the American aims to play the tournament as part of her ‘outrageous plan.’
“It’s hard to figure out what the end of your tennis career should look like,” Williams recently told Vogue magazine. “I used to think I’d want to retire when I have kids, but no. I’m definitely coming back.”
Sister Venus spoke briefly to ESPN about her new niece before her third round match at the US Open. This year is the 20th anniversary of her debut at the tournament.
‘Obviously I’m super excited. Words can’t describe.’” Said Venus.
Another high profile figure congratulating Williams is singer Beyonce, who took to Instagram to post a special message for the former world No.1. The two are known to be good friends and Williams once featured in one of Beyonce’s music videos.
There is yet be any official word from Williams or Ohanian on the birth of their baby girl and her name is yet to be announced.
