Nick Kyrgios has been issued with a duo of fines by the USTA following his first round loss to John Millman at the US Open.

The Australian world No.17 suffered with a shoulder injury during his four sets loss on Wednesday. Visibly frustrated he was first issued with a warning for racket abuse by the match umpire. He was then given a second penalty for swearing, resulting in a point deduction. At the time Kyrgios disputed the accusation of a verbal obscenity. The word wasn’t heard by the umpire, but was reported by one of the linesmen. However, a video replay showed him swearing to himself after one point.

As a result of the incidents, the USTA has issued Kyrgios with a total fine of $5500. $3000 for ‘audible obscenity’ and $2500 for ‘abuse of rackets and equipments.’ The penalty occurred a day after Kyrgios questioned his own commitment to the game. Asked about the future plans of his his collaboration with Sebastian Grosjean, 22-year-old bluntly said that he is ‘not good enough for him.’

“I don’t know, honestly. I’m not good enough for him,” Kyrgios said.
“He’s very dedicated. He’s an unbelievable coach. He probably deserves a player that is probably more dedicated to the game than I am. He deserves a better athlete than me.
“I’m not dedicated to the game at all.”

Despite the ongoing shoulder problem, Kyrgios is still at Flushing Meadows playing in the doubles with Matthew Reid. On Thursday the pair won their opening match to set up an intriguing encounter with the Bryan brothers.

“The only reason I play doubles is because of my partner.” He said. “Obviously Matty Reid, he’s been helping me for this whole year, and, I know it’s big for him to play the US Open dubs.”
“I’m the type of guy that would probably help someone out.”

Kyrgios is currently the leader in fines at the US Open. This year is the first time he has failed to beyond the second round of any grand slam tournament since 2013.
