Former US Open Doubles finalist Mariusz Fyrstenburg has announced his retirement from tennis. Predominantly a doubles specialist, Fyrstenburg teamed up with fellow Pole Marcin Matkowski to form one of the more potent doubles teams of the 2000s and 2010s.
Winning his first title (w.Matkowski in 2003,) and his final title (w.Santiago Gonazalez in 2016,) Fyrstenburg won at least one title in all but one of the intervening years for a total of 18 titles, only failing to capture a title in 2009.
The left-hander achieved a career-high ranking of No.6 in doubles in 2012, and reached the final of the 2011 US Open with Matkowski, though they were heavily beaten by Melzer/Petzschner. The pair also feature in six Masters finals, winning twice in Madrid in 2008 and 2012. They finished as runners-up in Madrid in 2007, as well as in Shanghai in 2009, and 2010, before their final effort in Miami in 2013.
Yet the Poles were a constant fixture on the doubles circuit and qualified for the year-end ATP World Tour Finals six times, reaching the final once.
Matkowski continues to play on the tour, having worked with a variety of players since the partnership with Fyrstenburg came to an end. His current partner is Indian specialist Leander Paes.
