The only remaining players who hadn’t seen the court played the first match on Day 2 at the Laver Cup. From the start it wasn’t much of a contest. Unlike the previous three singles matches on Friday which all needed tiebreakers, Roger Federer had little trouble defeating Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-1 in 68 minutes.
The tournament organizer, had spent most of Friday cheering on his teammates from the Team Europe lounge area. Instead it was the rest of his team including Rafael Nadal fist pumping and clapping for the 19-time Grand Slam champ.
Federer faced just one break point in the match while converting three breaks of his own. The highlighted shot which drew huge applause from a sold out O2 Arena was a tremendous backhand down the line in the fifth game of the second set. It brought the score back to deuce and Federer eventually broke in that game. Another moment saw the return of the SABR with Federer up 5-1. It was successful and he won the point drawing more cheers from the crowd.
Federer has never dropped a set to Querrey in three previous matches. Saturday was their fourth meeting on four different surfaces.
The World No 2 is not done for the day. He will play in a much anticipated doubles match partnering with Rafael Nadal later tonight against Querrey and Jack Sock.
