Rafael Nadal and Karolina Pliskova will headline the draws at next week’s US Open at Flushing Meadows in New York.
This year will be the 137th edition of the tournament. In the men’s draw, Nadal will lead the proceedings for the first time since 2010. The Spaniard won his tenth French Open title earlier in the year, but hasn’t won a hard-court title since January 2014. Second seed Andy Murray is set to make his return to the tour from a hip injury, which has sidelined him since Wimbledon. 19-time grand slam champion Roger Federer is seeded third and will be bidding to win his third major title of 2017. Meanwhile, rising star Alexander Zverev is fourth.
Last year’s men’s champion and runner-up will both be absent from the tournament. Stan Wawrinka has quit his season to undergo surgery on his knee and Novak Djokovic is recovering from an elbow injury. Kei Nishikori is also out of action due to a wrist injury.
The women’s draw will be a race for No.1 as well as the title. A total of eight women are within contention of claiming the top spot depending on results. Top seed Pliskova, who lost to Kerber in last year’s final, will be the first Czech player to headline the women’s draw in the Open Era.
Simona Halep lies in second place, five points adrift from the world No.1 spot. Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza and Elina Svitolina completes the quartet of seeds. Defending champion Kerber is seeded sixth in the draw.
