Former world No.1 Kim Clijsters believes that Serena Williams’ return to the tour could be tougher than some expect.

The 23-time grand slam champion is currently preparing for the birth of her first child later this year. In April Williams’ revealed her pregnancy in a Snapchat photo with a caption ‘20 weeks,’ which was later officially confirmed in a statement. It was revealed that she won the Australian Open whilst pregnant.

Speaking about the future return of Williams, Clijsters shared own own experience of playing as a mother. The Belgian won three grand slam titles after the birth of her first child in 2008. She admits that her return to the tour after giving birth was not easy, but points out that everybody is different.

“Every player is different, every pregnancy is different, every delivery is different so it’s really hard to comment on how quickly she’ll be able to bounce back,” she told AFP news.
“Tennis-wise, she won 23 Grand Slams before she went to have her baby. I (had) won one, so I think she has that part completely covered, no problem with the Grand Slams.
“But you have to find your way, especially as a first-time mother. I had a little bit of help too, my husband was able to travel with me. I wouldn’t be able to do it if my family wasn’t there.”

Victoria Azarenka gave birth to her baby son Leo in December. Six months later she returned to the tour, reaching the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships in only her second tournament in her comeback. During an interview with The Telegraph in July, she said that pregnancy actually helped her own development.

“Compared to my physique before pregnancy, yes, I do feel different. I have worked really hard and changed a few things – not only my fitness regime but also my nutrition. When I think about it, being pregnant definitely helped my physique.” She said.

Williams, who turns 36 next month, has previously talked about her desire to return to action at the start of next year. She is one grand slam title away from equalling Margreat Court’s all-time record of 24 trophies.
