JC Aragone causes massive shock in US Open Qualifying, Shapovalov through

The first round of the US Open qualifying saw a major shock win for young American JC Aragone. The 22 year-old defeated fifth seed Marco Cecchinato 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, ignoring a ranking difference of nearly four hundred places to win a match at US Open Qualifying for the first time. Aragone will play Italy’s Riccardo Bellotti after he defeated Andrea Collarini.

Young Canadian Denis Shapovalov defeated America’s Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-4. Shapovalov went down a break in the second set but recovered to break twice to win in straight sets.

Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Hiroki Moriya 6-3, 6-3. The 17 year-old dropped just six games as he looks to qualify for his first senior Grand Slam event. He will face veteran Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round after he defeated Alexey Vatutin 6-2, 6-1.

Tobias Kamke knocked out American Noah Rubin 6-1, 6-4 and Vaclav Safranek defeated Germany’s Daniel Masur 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. Akira Santillan knocked out Austria’s newest tennis star Sebastien Ofner 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Ofner qualified and then reached the third round of Wimbledon, but came undone against the in form Santillan.

Uladzimir Ignatik finished strongly to defeat Argentine veteran Maximo Gonzalez. The Argentine had worked his way back into the match by winning the second set. Ignatik then ran away with the third eventually winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-0.

Top seed Leonardo Mayer defeated France’s Maxime Janvier 6-4, 6-4. Mackenzie McDonald and Bradley Klahn both survived close matches to reach the second round. McDonald defeated Maden 6-4, 6-3, and Klahn recovered from a bagel in the second set to defeat Marc Polmans 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.

Casper Ruud, Tatsuma Ito, Kenny De Schepper, Jan Satral, Christian Harrison, Guido Andreozzi, and Vincent Millot were all also winners.
