6th seed Dominic Thiem is into the second round of the US Open after a clinical display in his opening round win.
The Austrian defeated young Australian star Alex De Minaur 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in a match spread over two days after rain affected play on the second day of first round fixtures.
Thiem’s second round match will feature either a former grand slam finalist or a NextGen player. He awaits the winner of Marcos Baghdatis’ match with home star Taylor Fritz.
De Minaur’s season has stuttered since a great start when he defeated Gerald Melzer at the Australian Open as a wildcard. He has since been given wildcards at the French and US Opens but has lost in the first round at both.
In other rain-affected matches to be completed on Tuesday were wins for Yuichi Sugita and Donald Young.
Sugita, who is in the form of his career after a strong showing in the Cincinnati Masters, defeated French wildcard Geoffrey Blancaneaux in emphatic fashion 6-2, 6-2, 6-0 for one of the most one-sided scorelines in the first round. Sugita will play the winner of the match between 26th seed Richard Gasquet and lucky loser Leonardo Mayer.
America’s Donald Young joined compatriots Steve Johnson, John Isner, and Sam Querrey in the second round by defeating German qualifier Maximilian Marterer 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. Young will face the winner of an all French clash between Jeremy Chardy and 18th seed Gael Monfils.
