Nick Kyrgios has had to retire from his match against Pierre-Hughes Herbert due to a hip injury. The Frenchman was leading 6-3 6-4 before Kyrgios could no longer continue.
From the first ball it was clear that Kyrgios was struggling with his hip and looked pretty depressed about it as well. He started to serve well and gain some good shots over his French opponent. However when a break occurred for Herbert in the eight game the talented Australian looked dejected and the unique serve and playing style of Herbert prevailed as he wrapped up the first set 6-3 in 59 minutes.
Again in the second set Kyrgios lacked fire and passion, which is something we rarely associate with the former Quarter-Finalist. Still Herbert did a professional job of serving big and doing his job to the very best of his ability as he broke the Kyrgios serve once again to 30 to have a 5-3 lead. Last year’s doubles champion took the second set 6-4 to lead two sets to love up. The Australian then called for the trainer and had some light treatment before he called it a day and was unable to finish the match.
Kyrgios To Have Surgery?
After the match Nick Kyrgios announced that doctors told him to miss Wimbledon and to have hip surgery, here is what he said after the match , ‘I spoke to the doctor before the tournament started. He was leaning towards me not even playing, It’s me favourite tournament. I want to do well here every year. So it’s tough for me to go out there and get beaten and pull out. It’s not the easiest thing for me to do’
So will Kyrgios have surgery? The Australian said he’ll wait a little bit before making his decision, ‘I would do everything possible to avoid it. But I don’t know. Yeah, I mean, obviously – I’m obviously a little bit scared , obviously. But I don’t think I need at the moment.’
Nick Kyrgios will be devastated as this is his grand slam and would have liked to gone deep. However it’s Herbert who sets up an all French clash with Benoit Paire in the next round.
