Roger Federer dispatched Mischa Zverev 7-6(3) 6-4 6-4 to book his place into the fourth round of Wimbledon.

Mischa Zverev’s tactic was clear from the start be aggressive on the serve and come into the net on every point on the serve. He would also need to do this on return to try and force some errors out of the seven time champion. The 28th seed initially started to do this as Federer found it hard to pass him on some occasions. However the current Australian Open champion found openings and an error of misjudgement allowed the Swiss to break for a 3-1 lead on his first break point. However Zverev was not one for backing down and as his backhand turned aggressive he forced a forehand error from Federer as 4-1 became 4-4.

One of the reasons why Zverev has been so good with his serve and volley game on the tour is how he varies up his serves to make it difficult for the opponents to return these serves. Federer survived a couple of break points to hold a big service game for 6-5 and with that came passion and desire. Despite a tight service game from the German he held to force a first set tiebreak. The early minibreak was vital Federer as his backhand reigned supreme as he took the tiebreak 7-3.

Federer continued his instinctive form using some incredible shot making to blow the German off the court, he raced into a early 3-1 lead as he started to anticipate the Zverev serve and volley strategy. Federer continued his smooth skills as his backhand blew Zverev’s out of the window. His movement was also the key in the second set as he continued to move the big serving German around the court. Despite Zverev holding on there were no breaks of serve as Federer took the second set 6-4.

It was only a matter of time until victory was confirmed for Federer who broke in the second game to storm to a 2-0 lead. Predictability was one of the main weaknesses for Zverev who just couldn’t add any variety to cause problems for the Swiss maestro. It was a foregone conclusion and Federer’s footwork was as supreme as ever. There were no more breaks of serve and Federer served out the match to book his place into the second week.

This is what the 18 time grand slam champion had to say about this, ‘I thought it was a good, fun match against Mischa. He is a serve and volleyer so there was a good mix of lobs and dropshots. I am very happy about this match.’

Roger Federer will now play Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round on Monday.
