Garbine Muguruza powers past Yanina Wickmayer 6-2 6-4 as she advanced to the third round at Wimbledon. While Bethanie Mattek-Sands suffered a potential career ending injury.
2015 finalist Garbine Muguruza overpowered her Belgian opponent today as both forehand and backhand wings were at the very centre of her success today. She used this to break twice in the first set as the Spaniard looked unbreakable today on serve. Not even Kim Clijsters could help Wickmayer in the first set as she tried everything to no avail as she succumbed to Muguruza. The former Roland Garros champion wrapped up the first set 6-2 in quick fashion.
Wickmayer looked more comfortable in the second set as she looked much more comfortable on her service games. Wickmayer brought a stunning impact with the second set as she packed a powerful punch with her forehand that moved the Spaniard around the court. Her tactic was clear and that was to force unforced errors out of Muguruza and to try to reduce the Spaniards power. However this only worked for a certain amount of time and the Spaniard realised she had to end this match quickly. She used her powerful backhand return to break in the tenth game and seal a straight sets win in relatively easy fashion.
The backhand return was the key shot for the tall Spaniard, who is starting to re-create the form that saw her into the final two years ago.
Career Ending Injury?
Garbine Muguruza will play Sorana Cirstea in the third round after Bethanie Mattek-Sands suffered a horrific injury. It was the fourth point of the final set when the American twisted her knee when attempting a volley. A mini ambulance had to enter court 17 and take her into hospital. Best friend and doubles partner Lucie Safarova was in tears at the scene, the duo were due to complete their career grand slam as a pairing at the event. Hopefully the injury isn’t too serious although it could be career ending. Here is the incident below:
