Garbiñe Muguruza stormed past Sorana Cirstea 6-2 6-2 to make the second week of Wimbledon and to establish her dominance in the Women’s draw.
The Spaniard used her power and confidence to establish dominance from the very beginning as her shot selection was the key for victory to Muguruza. Unfortunately shot selection and decision making was the Romanian’s weakness as she tried to use dropshots when she didn’t need to and as a result she made unforced errors. Muguruza broke on her first break point in the third game to gain a significant 2-1 lead. A second successive break loomed as the Spaniard’s return was too deep for Cirstea to have any sort of impact on the match. Muguruza stormed into a 4-1 lead and there was no looking back as she grabbed the first set 6-2 in 34 minutes.
The second set was a replay of the first as the 2015 finalist once again broke for a 2-1 lead at the start of the set. Cirstea was all over the place in the second set as her forehands were not hitting their intended locations and her dropshots was into the net too often. After a long seven minute service game the Spaniard repeated the opening set and broke for a 4-1 lead. The Spaniard wrapped up the match in 1 hour and 12 minutes to book her place into the fourth round.
The Spaniard looked relieved and delighted with her efforts in what has been a stressful 12 months for the 2015 runner-up. Muguruza will now play either world number one Angelique Kerber or Shelby Rogers.
Other Early results in the draw saw seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova defeat Slovenian Polona Hercog 6-4 6-0, while grass court specialist Magdalena Rybarikova beat Lesia Tsurenko 6-2 6-1.
