Usually when there is a match involving Milos Raonic and a retirement it is the Canadian who is pulling out of a tournament. This time Raonic, who has twice pulled out of matches this year himself, was on the other side of an injury as his third round opponent at the French Open Guillermo Garcia-Lopez withdrew from his match after the first game of the second set with a thigh muscle injury.
Raonic easily won the first set 6-1 in 21 minutes and then broke in the first game of the second before Garica-Lopez decided he could no longer continue. The thigh problem had been bothering the 153rd ranked Spaniard since his opening round match.
“I thought he was going for more than he normally would have, at least since I’ve played him recently,” said Raonic.”I don’t know if necessarily it was a strategy. He sort of gifted me that first game. But I thought I had much better intentions than I did in my previous match. There are some things that are definitely positive on my side, but unfortunate for the way it sort of had to take place throughout the rest of it. ”
Raonic moves into the fourth round at Roland-Garros for the third time in four years. He missed the 2015 French Open because of injury. He will face another Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in the next round. Carreno Busta had an impressive straight sets win over Grigor Dimitrov on Friday
“I watched a bit of his match today,” said the fifth seeded Raonic. “He’s playing quite well, improved over the last 16 months or so, played him a few times towards the end of last year. He’s very solid. He’s disciplined. You really have to beat him, take it to him. ”
