Kevin Anderson was 6-3 3-0 down to Marin Cilic before he retired due to a thigh injury, this saw the Croatian advance to the QuarterFinals at Roland Garros.

It was a good start to the match for the South African as he broke the Croatian for a 1-0 lead. At this early stage Anderson looked to have recovered from his five set epic with Kyle Edmund. Anderson then held to 15 to create a dominant 2-0 lead. However Marin Cilic isn’t a grand slam champion for nothing and soon began his charge as he won eight points on the bounce to draw level at 2-2. Despite Anderson’s determination on serve his resistance ran out as big forehands for Cilic secured the break for a 4-2 lead. The rest of the set went on serve and as a result the seventh seed took the first set 6-3.

The struggling world number 56 looked helpless and was soon a double break down to Cilic at 3-0 in the second set. It was obvious that Anderson was feeling the effects of his previous match and it was confirmed when he retired due o a thigh injury. The South African will be disappointed that he withdrew but has had an amazing tournament beating the likes of Nick Kyrgios.

However Cilic, who has yet to drop a set, will play another player who hasn’t dropped a set yet, Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
