Andy Murray was still pleased of his efforts at Roland Garros despite his five set epic semi-final defeat to Stan Wawrinka.

As the world number one entered the press room he looked despondent and sad on how his afternoon in Paris ended. However he showed his experience in these type of situations as he answered his questions with great professionalism and honesty. The Brit reflected on the tournament and the key factors that lead to his Roland Garros exit and the obvious element in losing to Wawrinka was his fitness. He also admitted that only he was to blame as a lack of form lead to a lack of match practice and a lack of hours in a match scenario. Here is what he said on the matter:

‘Maybe the lack of matches hurt me a little bit in the end today. You know, that was a very high intensity match. A lot of long points. When you haven’t been playing loads, you know, over four, four-and-a-half hours, that can catch up to you a little bit. So, you know, I only have myself to blame for that, for the way I played coming into the tournament.’

However he took the positives from this as if reaching the Semi-Finals of a grand slam was above his expectations, which is weird to hear from a world number one. Here is what he had to say on his ‘proud’ Roland Garros performance:

Well, I’m proud of the tournament I had. I did well considering. You know, I was one tiebreak away from getting to the final when I came in really struggling. So I have to be proud of that. I turned my form around you know and ended up having a good tournament, all things considered.’

Analysis

It was a professional press conference considering it was a tough loss to take for Murray. The positives for Murray are that he got to the Semi-Finals of Roland Garros, which many people like myself didn’t think he would get there given his early clay court exits, so that he will be proud of. However the negatives from the tournament is that he ran out of steam very easily in that final set and that will be concerning as that is not in his character to do that. How many more chances will Andy Murray get at winning Roland Garros? That remains to be seen.

Andy Murray will now return to the grass court season and he will need to focus as by the end of it he may lose his world number one ranking.
