Australia’s Nick Kyrgios moved into the third round of the Madrid Masters after a convincing 6-3, 6-3 win over the United States’ Ryan Harrison.
Kyrgios played a virtually flawless first set, dropping just one point on serve and breaking the American twice. Harrison worked hard to earn a break point in set two, but he could not break and found himself broken once to send the Australian through.
Kyrgios added Harrison to the name of Marcos Baghdatis of players that he has so far vanquished from the tournament. Kyrgios is likely to face a tough task in third round as he awaits the winner of the match between Rafael Nadal and Fabio Fognini.
Another big winner on Wednesday was Milos Raonic. The Canadian former Wimbledon finalist has struggled with a hamstring injury for much of the last two months, but he defeated last week’s Estoril finalist Gilles Muller 6-4, 6-4. Raonic will next face Belgium’s David Goffin.
In other news, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was forced to withdraw from the tournament ahead of his match with veteran David Ferrer. The Frenchman had struggled to a narrow win over Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov in the first round, but evidently felt that he could not compete and conceded before the match began.
