It has been a stunning week for the qualifier from Argentina, Guido Pella. The former World No.39 (now No.158,) came from behind to defeat Hyeon Chung 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in Bavaria.
In a match lasting two hours and forty minutes, it was Pella who emerged to reach the final. The win will be especially sweet for Pella, as it enacts revenge on Chung for the defeat he suffered to the Korean in Barcelona qualifying last week.
Pella has had a terrific week with wins over fellow qualifier Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, Fabio Fognini, and compatriot Horacio Zeballos before defeating Chung. Pella would likely have to win the title to move back into the Top 100.
He will face in the final the third seed Alexander Zverev, who defeated second seed Roberto Baustista Agut in straight sets 7-5, 7-5. Zverev found a rich vein of form late in the first set, winning five straight games that gave him the opener and the first break in the second. Bautista Agut did manage to break back, but Zverev found another late break to finish the match
Zverev’s run to the final of the tournament held in his home nation has included wins over Jan-Lennard Struff and Jeremy Chardy.
