Eugenie Bouchard ended her four month losing streak at the Mutua Madrid Open after a 6-4 4-6 6-1 victory over Alize Cornet.
The Canadian was focused and determined and focused on a fast Madrid clay court as the one break was enough in the first set to grab the set 6-4. However Cornet proved she was a fighter and the second set saw her be more aggressive to take the second set 6-4. However Genie remained calm and broke three times in the final set to power herself into the second round. The former grand slam finalist could play Maria Sharapova in round two, which could be interesting as the young Canadian called for the Russian to be ‘banned for life’
It was a more positive and explosive performance from Bouchard, who won her first WTA tour match since the Australian Open. She used the tight angles and dictated play from her serve.
