In WTA matches in Miami, Timea Babos, who recently won her home-country tournament in Budapest, captured the first set against the 57th ranked French woman, Pauline Parmentier; after securing the first set in a breaker, Parmentier took the second and third sets for the win, 6-2 6-0.

Meanwhile, Indian Wells winner Elena Vesnina managed to thwart Ajla Tomljanovic’s first two match-points, but then lost the third one, and Tomljanovic advanced to the third round, 3-6 6-4 7-5.

Svetlana Kuznetsova, the Indian Wells runner-up, started out slowly, down an early break in the first set, but then hit the gas pedal and powered her way to a 6-2 6-2 win over Luxembourg’s Mandy Minella.

Barbora Strycova struggled mightily, getting the W in the third set breaker against Sweden Johanna Larsson (4-6 6-3 7-6).

Latvia’s Anastaslia Sevastova was knocked out of the tournament by Sorana Cirstea, 7-6 3-6 6-3.

Spain’s Arruabarreno-Vecino won in three sets against Cirstea’s Rumanian compatriot, Irina-Camelia Begu, 3-6 6-4 6-3.

Kiki Mladenovic also lost, surrendering in two sets against Patricia Maria Tig (7-6 6-2).

The all-Australian encounter between Ashleigh Barty and Samantha Stosur saw Samantha winning ugly, 6-4 6-4, securing her only service breaks right at the end of each set.

Ekaterina Makarova clinched the first set in the breaker, but the 32nd seed went down in a stunning defeat, losing the next two sets 2-6 2-6 to qualifier Anett Kontaveit.

Brit Johanna Konta, seeded 10th, went up 6-2 4-2 against Aliaksandra Sasnovich, another qualifier, but eventually lost the second set in the tiebreak. Konta needed the third set to sort out the Sasnovich issue, eventually moving on to the third round with a 6-2 6-7 6-4 win.
