Petra Kvitova’s recovery from the hand injury sustained when a man stabbed her after breaking into her apartment during her off-season break is “more serious than expected” according to reports.

The man had posed as a maintenence worker in order to gain entry to the player’s apartment in December 2016.

Her manager Miroslva Cernosek said, “Petra will try to return to play, but it does not depend on her.”

The World No.12 was stabbed in her dominant left hand in the attack, though she quickly asserted that she hoped and expected to return sometime in 2017. Nearly three months into 2017 though, there is no tangible sign of her return and the less than optimistic statements by her team suggests that two-time Wimbledon champion’s recovery time could be more complicated and extended than originally anticipated.

Kvitova had undergone immediate surgery on her damaged tendons in the aftermath of the stabbing, and her spokesperson at the time had indicated that it had gone well.
