11 days ago John Goehrke was getting ready for the biggest sporting event in America, the Super Bowl. Since then he has gone from being an everyday Missouri student to making world headlines after winning a bet to go on a date with Eugenie Bouchard.
The bet started when Bouchard confidently stated that the Atlanta Falcons was going to win the Super Bowl, publicly posting it on her Twitter account. The Falcons did have a 21-3 lead at half-time. An opportunistic Goehrke saw the tweet and seized the chance to bet Bouchard that they have to go on a date if the Falcons lost, which she accepted.
Despite her confidence, Tom Brady’s New England Patriots staged one of the most memorable comebacks in Super Bowl history to lift the title, stunning both the Patriots and Bouchard. As the bet between the two made headlines around the world, Bouchard was determined to fulfil her part of the bargain.
“I want to honor my word and stay true to it, so I’m going on that date and that’s actually tonight,” she told Sports Illustrated. “We’re going to go to the Brooklyn Nets game. He’s flying in this afternoon, so I look forward to meeting him tonight and I hope he enjoys it. And I hope it’s not too awkward.”
Throughout the experience, the world No.44 admitted that she was apprehensive about going on a date with somebody she had never met before.
“After all the media attention it got, it was something I first of all could not back out of. There was no chance,” Bouchard said on SI’s Extra Mustard. “I was worried, however. When I looked at his Twitter profile and his profile picture was a photo of Tiger Woods, I was like, ‘It’s one of those Twitter fans. I don’t even know what he looks like. What’s going to happen?’ But it turns out that he seems to be a very nice boy.”
Fortunately the night went better for the two than it did for the Brooklyn Nets, who lost 125-129 to Milwaukee Bucks to remain at the bottom on the NBA table. Bouchard and Goehrke were seen smiling together courtside at the NBA Game.
