The first day at the men’s tournament at the Australian Open began with Nicolas Almagro’s withdrawal against Jeremy Chardy after just four games.

Jo Wilfried Tsonga lost a set, but eventually edged past Thiago Monteiro 6-1 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 showing a sparkling tennis.

Israel’s Dudi Sela confirmed his good shape he had already shown in Chennai by winning against Marcel Granollers 5-7 6-3 6-2 6-0.

On court 13 22nd seed Pablo Cuevas, lost to Argentinian Diego Schwartzman 6-3 6-3 6-0.

Mischa Zverev followed up his recent good results shown in the final part of 2016 with a 6-3 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez . Ryan Harrison eased past Nicholas Mahut 6-3 6-4 6-2..
