Two-time Grand Slam champion and former world number 1 Victoria Azarenka made a successful comeback from years of injuries early this year winning two consecutive WTA Premier Mandatory tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami (the so called “Sunshine” double”) before taking a period off from tennis due to maternity leave.
The Belarussian star said during an interview to Tennis Channel that she is missing tennis and her fans but will need time to recover before reurning to the court and does not want to rush.
“I don’t feel I am missing out on something I won’t be able to do again. For me, it’s about getting to where I want to be and be back there again. That’s my ultimate goal. I don’t put any time frame on myself. I would love to make it as soon as possible, but give myself a reasonable time to fully recover and be ready. I am not going to rush anything, and it’s hard to tell before the birth actually happens. So we’ll see, but I am confident that I will be able to play tennis again pretty soon.”, said Azarenka.
During the interview Azarenka has reflected on her life and the role of tennis during pregnancy.
“My pregnancy has been a completely different experience from anything I have done before. In theory you know the process, but to actually go through it, you truly start to deeply understand the magic of it. It’s been quite a ride. Tennis is my career, but there is a different part of life. This was a blessing, a gift from God. I believe I still have a great opportunity to do what I love, as long as I love playing tennis. I do, and this is an opprtunity to realize how much I love what I do”, said Azarenka.
