Gael Monfils ended the year at number 7 in the ATP Ranking after reaching a career-high of number 6 last November. He qualified for the ATP Finals for the first time in his career after the best season of his career. The Frenchman won the ATP 500 in Washington, reached the US Open semifinals, the Australian Open quarter final and the final at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 where he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam (losing to Martin Klizan).
The key for his successful season was the ability to convert break points. During the 2016 season Monfils improved his conversion rate of break points compared to 2015, when he finished the year at world number 24.
According to the latest statistics published on the ATP Tour website, the number of return games he played in 2016 (660) was almost identical to 2015 (654) but the Frenchman improved by almost five percent converting 44 more break points in 2016 than last year (189 to 145).
