World number 11 David Goffin split up with coach Thomas Johansson after 9 months working together.

After hiring Thomas Johansson in February, David Goffin has decided to end the duo’s relationship after 9 months of hard work. The Swede lead Goffin to his first ever Masters 1000 semifinal in Indian Wells, which was followed by another semifinal just a couple of weeks later in Miami. The Belgian also reached his maiden grand slam quarterfinal under Johansson at Roland Garros in May.

Another highlight of Goffin’s 2016 season under Johansson was reaching his first ever ATP World Tour 500 final in Tokyo, where he lost to eventual winner Nick Kyrgios. These accomplishments earnt him an alternate spot at the ATP World Tour Finals in London, where he played Novak Djokovic in the round robin stage. Goffin notched up 49 wins in 2016, with Johansson responsible for 44 of those wins.

Goffin was able to add to his impressive style of play by increasing the depth and power within his shots, with his stand out shot being his backhand. He also added craft and creativity within his game, as you can see at the beginning of the video below:

However we would find out on Wednesday afternoon Goffin and Johansson’s successful partnership would officially end. Goffin announced the split on his official Twitter, this is what he said:

The split is a great shame as they were making an effective pairing, with Goffin reaching a career high ranking of number 11 in the world. Goffin’s game reached new heights, and his fans will hope that Goffin continues his form in 2016 onto the 2017 season even without Thomas Johansson. Why they split is still to be determined, however one thing is for sure and that Johansson will be missed by David Goffin and his fans.
