Nominations for this year’s ATP World Tour Awards have been published with both tour veterans and rising stars headlining proceedings.

The ATP awards are an annual event that recognizes the achievements by players and tournaments throughout the tennis season. The winners of the awards are decided by either fans, fellow players or the ATP depending on the category. This year Roger Federer is bidding to win his 12th Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship award and Juan Martin del Potro will be aiming to become only the third player in history to win the comeback player of the year award for a second time after receiving the honour in 2011.

One notable absence from the Stefan Edberg category is world No.1 Novak Djokovic, who didn’t receive enough votes. The four men shortlisted for the title are based on votes from other ATP players. Joining frontrunner Federer will be Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Rafael Nadal. The award recognizes players who have displayed high levels of professionalism in the sport.

The most improved player category feature four strong European contenders who has all proved their worth on the tour this season. Dominic Thiem, who has already played 76 singles matches on the tour this season, broke the top 10 for the first time in his career. The Austrian has won titles in Stuttgart, Nice, Acapulco and Buenos Aires. Lucas Pouille stunned Rafael Nadal in the fourth round of the US Open. Pouille, who also reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, recently won his first ATP title in Metz. Germany’s Alexander Zverev is another player who recently won their maiden ATP title at the St. Petersburg Open. At 20th in the world, Zverev is the youngest player to break the top 20 since Juan Martin del Potro in 2008. Finally, Dan Evans made the cut after rising almost 130 places in the rankings to 53rd. Evans has won three Challenger titles this year.
