Borna Coric’s chances of playing in the final of the Davis Cup has been given a boost following a ‘better than expected’ recovery from a knee operation.
The 19-year-old hasn’t played a match since his straight sets loss to Richard Gasquet during Croatia’s clash with France in the Davis Cup semifinals last month. Shortly after his defeat, a scan found that Coric has two bones that was causing discomfort to the tendon in his knee. As a result of the findings, the Croat opted to undergo an operation to correct the problem.
Speaking about his rehabilitation progress on Wednesday, Coric said that his recovery is exceeding expectations as he hopes to be ready in time for the Davis Cup final, which will start on November 25th.
“The recovery is going great, even better than I expected.” Coric told Croatian media yesterday. “Yesterday (Monday) it was three weeks after the surgery. I stopped using crutches after five, six days.”
The doctors have given me a good prognosis. Throughout the ten days I will start to run, and perhaps slightly play. First estimates were that I would need six to eight weeks, so I give that I am very positive.” He added.
This season the world No.46 has experienced a roller coaster performance on the tour with a win-loss record of 22-24. He has managed to reach two ATP finals in Chennai, India and Marrakech, Morocco. Approaching the climax of 2016, Coric announced that he has hired Ivica Ancic as his new coach. Ancic is best known for working with his brother and former top 10 player Mario Ancic.
“I would like to inform you that Ivica Ancic will be my new coach. I am happy to start the relationship with a coach who helped his brother Mario on the way to Top 10.” Coric said in a statement last month.
Croatia’s Davis Cup final against Argentina will be hosted home territory at the 15,000 capacity Zagreb Arena. It will be the first time in history that the country has hosted a final. A win over Argentina will give the Croats their second Davis Cup title and first since 2005.
