Alexander Zverev came back from one set down to beat Marin Cilic 3-6 6-3 6-2 with three breaks (one in the second set and two in the third set) in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters. Zverev, who won his first ever title at ATP level in St. Petersburg beating this year’s US Open champion Stan Wawrinka, will break in the top-20 next week.
This year’s Cincinnati Masters 1000 champion Cilic got the only break of the opening set in the eighth game at deuce and served out for the set to 30. In the second set Zverev held his serve at deuce after a long first game. The 19-year-old German player converted his second break point chance in the sixth game at deuce to take a 4-2 lead and won his next service games to clinch the second set. Zverev broke twice in the fifth and seventh games to race out to a 5-2 lead and served out to 30 in the final game.
Zverev won 74 percent of his points off his first serve and converted three of the six points and saved three of the four break points he faced.
