Thursday’s action at Flushing Meadows will see title contenders Andy Murray and Serena Williams bid to extend their dominating record against their second round rivals.
Murray will face Spain’s Marcel Granollers, a player who he has defeated in straight sets in their four most recent meetings. It will be the second encounter between the two this year after the Indian Wells Masters, when the Wimbledon champion clinched the win 6-4, 7-6(3). 30-year-old Granollers has only been able to win back-to-back matches in one tournament since June.
Top seed Serena Williams will be hoping that she can reproduce her heroics from two years ago against Vania King. Williams played King in flushing Meadows in 2014 and stormed to a 6-1, 6-0, victory. Despite being recently blighted with inflammation in her right shoulder, Williams will be the outstanding favourite against a player who has only progressed beyond the second round of a major tournament four times since 2005.
2014 runner-up Kei Nishikori will face the inconsistent, but talented, Russian qualifier Karen Khachanov in the first match in the Louis Armstrong stadium. Both men have already dropped a set in the tournament. Nishikori encountered a third set blip in an otherwise routine win over Benjamin Becker. Meanwhile, Khachanov endured resistance from Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano.
Stan Wawrinka will also play a qualifier, Alessandro Giannessi, in what will be their first meeting on the tour. Eighth seed Dominic Thiem will be the favourite in his match against Richardes Berankis. Berankis’ first round triumph over Malek Jaziri was his first tour win since June. Finally, Juan Martin del Potro against Steve Johnson will be the headline night match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
In the women’s draw, fifth seed Simona Halep will play former French Open semifinalist Lucie Safarova. It will be the first meeting between the two players since 2014 and Halep current leads the head-to-head 3-1. Venus Williams will be hoping for an easier meeting against Julia Goerges after spending almost three hours on the court in her roller coaster first round match. Last year Williams dismissed the German in straight sets at the Wuhan Open in China. Finally, Agnieszka Radwanska will play Great Britain’s Naomi Broady.
