During the day 4 of the Chengdu Open, Kevin Anderson saved two match points to beat the second seed Nick Kyrgios, while first seeded Dominic Thiem won in straight sets against the wild card Di Wu.
The South African giant Anderson, who is ranked 45th at the moment, knocked out the fellow big server Nick Kyrgios 3-6 7-6(6) 6-2 in 1 hour and 33 minutes, reaching the quarterfinals of an Atp tournament for the fifth time in the season. The tourning point of the match happened in the second set tie-break, when Kyrgios had two match points on 6-4 after Anderson double faulted when 4-3 up. But the Australian could not convert any of them and lost four straight points, as Anderson forced a third set before dominating the third set 6-2. The 30 year-old South African also hit more aces than his opponent (24 to 21) and won the 75% of service points, facing only two break points. On Friday he will face Serbian sixth seed Viktor Troicki, who beat Marcos Baghdatis 6-3 4-6 6-2 in 1 hour and 46 minutes.
Also, first seeded Dominic Thiem started his campaign with a two sets win over Chinese wild-card Di Wu. The Austrian converted three of his seven break points for a 6-4 6-4 victory in 1 hour and 7 minutes. In the quarterfinals he will face Spaniard third seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who won a 2 hours and 28 minutes battle against Yen-Hsun Lu 7-6(4) 3-6 6-4. Ramos won fewer points in the match (105 to 107), but was able to come back from a break down in the third, winning six of the last eight games.
The other two quarterfinals matches will see third seed Grigor Dimitrov meeting Diego Schwartzman and fourth seed Feliciano Lopez playing Karen Khachanov.
