Caroline Wozniacki is not losing any sleep about her 9-year ranking low following her 6-3, 6-4, win over Madison Keys in the fourth round of the US Open.
Wozniacki’s run to her first major quarter-final since 2014 comes after what has been a testing season. Sidelined from the clay season due to an ankle injury followed by a series of early tournament exits, the former world No.1 has slipped top 74th in the world. It is a dramatic turn of events for a player who was seeded fourth in Flushing Meadows last year.
“I know it sounds bad, but honestly, at the point, I really don’t care what my ranking is.” Wozniacki admitted.
“If I’m not in the top 5 I feel like it’s not where I want to be, so at that point, whether I’m 20 in the world or 100 in the world, it doesn’t matter because I’m going to play the same people anyway.”
The run in New York is the first time that the former world No.1 has won four consecutive matches since February 2015. It appears that the run is a breakthrough for Wozniacki, however, the Dane has a rather different viewpoint of her performance.
“I’m not surprised that I could make it this far because I always believe in myself and I always think that — when I got on court I always believe that I’ll win the match.” She said.
“But it’s nice. It’s a nice feeling.”
Notching up only her 13th win on the tour this season, Wozniacki now faces a last eight encounter with unseeded Latvian Anastasija Sevastova, who has already defeated seeds Garbine Muguruza and Johanna Konta in New York. It will be the first meeting between both players since the 2011 Australian Open and Wozniacki is expecting a tough match.
“She’s a tough player. She’s a tough opponent. She has a lot of grit and good hands. It’s not going to be an easy one, but I’m excited just to have another shot.” Wozniacki said about her upcoming match.
Regardless of the outcome of her upcoming match, Wozniacki is set to re-enter the world’s top 50 after slipping to 74th place. The 26-year-old has displayed in New York that she has the ability to battle with the best in the world once again. The question remaining is if she will be able to do this on a consistent basis?
