It isn’t very often that the proceedings on the court are overshadowed by the activities in the crowd, but that is what exactly happened during Juan Martin Del Potro’s match against Joao Sousa at the Olympic Games.
Proceedings between the two players was halted following an altercation in the crowd. An unnamed Argentine fan landed a right handed punch against another spectator before being escorted away from the court by members of the Brazilian military. It is unclear what caused the fight and what happened to the man following the incident. Shortly after the man landed the hit, he was surrounded by Brazilian fans as the crowd expressed their displeasure. According to The Daily Mail, one shouted ‘This is not what the Olympics is all about.”
Del Potro and Sousa briefly left the court whilst the police tackled the incident.
