In the first day of the Us Open qualifying 32 men’s matches were completed, with 16 players advancing to the second round.
The qualifying tournament gives 16 places in the Us Open main draw to those players who win three straight matches.
Brazilian fourth seed Thiago Monteiro lost a tough battle against German big server Daniel Brands 6-4 3-6 7-6(5). Both players made one break in the match, but two points in the final set tie-break made the difference.
Also, fifteenth seed Jozef Kovalik came back from a set down to beat Australian Sam Groth 3-6 7-6(4) 6-3. Groth, who is living a nightmare-season with only 10 wins in 37 matches, has fallen outside top 200.
Former top-10 Jurgen Melzer saved all the six break points faced to knock out American Tennys Sandgren 7-5 6-1, while Australian Matthew Barton upset fifth seed Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-7(3) 6-2 7-6(6).
Other interesting wins were those of Indian Saketh Myneni 6-3 7-5 on Albano Olivetti, Serbian Marko Tepavac 7-6(2) 6-7(0) 6-3 on Peter Gojowczyk and Canadian Frank Dancevic 6-4 6-3 on Ruben Bemelmans.
