Croatian Marin Cilic and French Gael Monfils won in three sets respectively on Dutra Silva and Muller, Russian Mikhail Youzhny outplayed 28th seed Martin Kiran.
Seventh seeded Cilic, who went to Flushing Meadows on a six-match winning streak, thanks to his title at the Cincinnati Masters, defeated Brazilian Dutra Silva 6-4 7-5 6-1. The Croat won the 88% of first serve points and hit 12 aces.
Monfils, who has the tenth seed, ousted big server Gilles Muller from Luxembourg 6-4 6-2 7-6(5) without getting broken. Muller had a very low percentage of first serves in in the first two sets, under 50%, and that made the things easier for his opponent, who also came back from 3-5 down in the third set tie-break.
Then, veteran Mikhail Youzhny marked a really impressive win on Slovakian Martin Klizan, 6-2 6-1 6-1 in less than two hours of play. Klizan hit 13 double faults and was broken nine times out of eleven service games.
Also, 31st seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas outlasted French Julien Benneteau in five sets, 3-6 6-3 6-3 2-6 6-1 and Ukrainian serve-and-volley specialist Sergiy Stakhovsky came back from 3-5 down in the fifth to beat Portuguese Gastao Elias 6-1 3-6 2-6 6-3 7-6(4).
Unfortunately two players were forced to retire due to injury: Argentinian Facundo Bagnis and Slovakian Lukas Lacko. Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis and American Ernesto Escobedo advanced.
